They then visited Clarence Park to play their last Weston Over 60s fixture against Clarence Blues. This was a must win for Clarence to ensure they stayed in the top division but Winscombe got revenge for their defeat in the semi final of the Over 60s cup and won by 15shots securing 15 points to Carence's 5. Winscombe also entertained their friends from Notts County. These tourists have been visiting Winscombe every year for 60 years and apart from the war years have never missed this traditional fixture. Once again the game of bowls was the winner although this year the tourists did snatch a win too.
In the Clevedon and District Pairs Competition Finals at Nailsea Mike Adams and Tommy Ellis won in a close match which went right down to the last end.

The Somerset Officials were very pleased with Sam following his debut for the U25's last Sunday at Queen Camel Bowling Club, and feel he shows real promise for the future. Although Devon won the match comfortably, his rink only lost 20 - 22 after being 4 - 16 down after 10 ends.Sam has been promised further games next season when he hopes to be playing with new coloured bowls

THE GREEN

colin

After 35 years managing our green Colin Westlake has decided to handover the reins to his able assistant Lew Collier.
The green has received much praise over the years Colin has been in charge and without doubt is still a credit to his devotion .
Certainly 'one of ' if not 'the' best in Somerset and even the UK.
It is 90 years since the green was laid in 1922 and during those years the green has had just 2 main green keepers for over 80 years. Jack Nuttycombe for well over 40 years and Colin.
Colin is not retiring. He will still be helping and guiding Lew but our new Green Keeper, will now be 'Boss 1 ' .
With the knowledge passed onto Lew by Colin we know the green is in safe hands and will continue to be the ' finest in the County'.
Good Luck Lew.

Week ending 30th June (as reported to The Mercury and Cheddar Gazette)

Winscombe's week started with a loss but finished with a win which moved them to Top of the Somerset County League Division 2 North.

Winscombe then went on to a mixed match at Bridgwater BCL where they found that this would be their last match on this green as BCL are unfortunately having to close at the end of the season due to lack of members. Fittingly, the match ended in a draw.
Both mid week league games were lost . In the Weston Over 60's game against Ashcombe Crusaders they won on 2 rinks but went down heavily on 1 rink resulting in a 30 shot deficit overall. At Congresbury Winscombe lost on all 5 rinks.
A visit to Mark Moor for a friendly game got Winscombe back to winning ways with a 29 shot win .

WINSCOMBE BEAT VICTORIA IN TURNBULL CUP

An exciting and historic week for Winscombe who played Victoria twice and won twice. First they celebrated the 90th Anniversary of the opening of their green when teams from Winscombe & Victoria B.C. played again. It was these two teams who played the inaugural game in 1922 . It was a lovely day and unlike the first game back in 1922 the Men had a close game winning by 2 shots. Ladies did not play in 1922 but this time the Ladies too had a close game losing by 3 shots.
There was an excellent buffet lunch and speeches by President Lew Collier and Dave Williams, the Victoria President. The Clubs exchanged gifts and greenkeeper Colin Westlake received a very handsome handmade wooden pen to celebrate 34 years of green keeping at Winscombe.
The following day a more serious game in the 3rd round of the Turnbull Cup was played at Victoria. Winscombe were never behind. They got off to a good start on 2 rinks and Victoria also went ahead on 2 rinks. However, at 14 ends the rink skipped by Tony Watts picked up a 6 which reversed the lead and then they never looked back. Mike Adams rink were solid throughout winning by 9 shots and Rod Feltham's rink had a 6 shot lead but Victoria came back strongly to draw the rink on the last end. Only Tommy Ellis rink lost but managed to narrow the deficit to just 5 shots. A historic win for Winscombe who have now beaten Victoria 3 times in 2 weeks.

In the Leagues - Winscombe have still not managed a win in the Clevedon & District Co-operative Funeralcare Evening League but in the Weston Over 60's league they had a good win against Ashcombe Knights picking up 16 points to 4. The B Team in Div 2 North continued unbeaten on the green by winning in their home fixture against Portishead on 2 rinks. Captain Malcolm Dorrington snatching a draw on the last end. Winscombe 11 points, Portishead 1 point.

Ladies:

Winscombe Ladies played 2 matches this week narrowly losing in their green 90th anniversary match against Victoria by 3 shots. It was a close tussle throughout played on a lovely morning and watched by men from both sides which created a great atmosphere around the green.
Their Wessex League match resulted in another win and their is no doubt that Winscombe Ladies are now a force to be reckoned with.

Men:

The highlight of Winscombe's week was beating Victoria in the North Somerset Bowling Association's KO Cup. The match was played on grey evening but the bowls was exciting particularly on the rink skipped by Rod Feltham and Mike Stocker. After 8 ends Victoria were running away with this rink and had a 10 shot lead. But Winscombe rallied in the second half and the rink was won by 13 shots. Overall Winscombe won on 5 rinks to 1 and 23 shots. Next week Winscombe play Victoria twice. On Thursday 24th May Winscombe have invited Victoria to a replay of the opening of their green on the same day in 1922. By coincidence Winscombe meet Victoria again on Friday in the Turnbull Cup.
Winscombe have still not had a win in the Clevedon & District Co-operative Funeralcare Evening League . This week Clevedon Prom were the victors securing 9 points to Winscombe's 2.
In the Weston and District Over 60's League Winscombe are also looking for their first win . Against Ascombe Knights they lost by 14 shots 5points to 15points.
After a good start in the County Leagues Winscombe failed to win to win at both away fixtures.
At Clevedon the A Team had a really close match . Winscombe were 2 shots ahead after Winscombe's 2 losing rinks had finished . Rod Feltham's rink had 2 ends to play after Rod had killed one end. Unfortunately , the rink lost a 4 on the penultimate end and despite apparently having a wood from each side touching the jack on the last end Victoria scored another shot to win by 3 shots.
The B Team went to Portishead and disaster struck when one of the Winscombe team failed to turn up. Under the Somerset County League Rule 6f the match is awarded to the home team but rink points are awarded to the winning rinks. Winscombe won on both the rinks played by 20 shots so scored 4 points but the match was awarded to Portishead RBL.

W/e 12th May 2012 (as reported to The Mercury and Cheddar Gazette)

A busy week for Winscombe with no less than 8 matches played. Both the men and ladies started the week well with good wins and the men finished off in style with both their county teams also winning.

Winscombe Ladies went to Clarence Park and beat Wessex by 25 shots. They won on all 3 rinks in dreadful conditions. The Winscombe Ladies joined the Wessex League last year when they regularly narrowly failed to win. Their first match this year under new Captain Lorna Whatling showed they are now a threat to all teams in this League. It was their first ever win in the Wessex League.

Winscombe Men visited Clevedon in the 1st Round of The 4 Dimensions Competition . A tough ask but despite losing the singles they had a good win in the Pairs and won the Triples on the last end. In the 4's Rink it was nip and tuck but Winscombe ran out winners by 4 shots to win overall by 3 games to 1.
By tradition the match against Bath BC is 21 end triples. This match ,away at Bath ,saw Winscombe gain another victory by 17 shots overall.
At West Backwell in the Clevedon District League the match was played in heavy rain and concluded at 15 ends. Winscombe drew on 1 rink and lost on the others to secure 1/2 point which kept them one spot off the bottom .
The Weston and District Over 60's League match at Winscombe against Clevedon Prom resulted in The prom enjoying the wet conditions better than the home side to run out winners on 4 rinks to 1 with 1 rink drawn.
At Taunton BC (Vivary Park) it was a close game with Winscombe winning on 3 rinks to 2 but failing to secure the win by 5 shots.
In the Someset County League Division 1 North, Winscombe A Team beat Portishead RBL B and secured 11 points to 1 by winning on 2 rinks and drawing on 1.
Winscombe B Team in Division 2 North travelled to Bristol and also won gaining 10 points to Bristol 2.

w/e 5th May 2012 (as reported to The Mercury and Cheddar Gazette)

It has been a sad week for Winscombe Bowling Club following the death of our ex President John Baker. As a mark of respect our match on Tuesday at home v North Petherton was cancelled.
We also had one other cancellation this week when our Weston and District Over 60's match at Burnham on Sea was cancelled as their green was flooded.
This season Winscombe have entered the Clevedon and District Mid Week Evening League and have lost to both their first week's opponents. The first match was played at Long Ashton on a cold damp evening and the deficit was 26 shots across 4 rinks. 2 rinks lost but Rod Feltham's rink won and Mike Adam's rink came back over the last 3 ends to secure a draw. In the other match Congresbury won at Winscombe by 24 shots and 3 rinks to 2 with Mike Adam's rink winning by13 shots and Steve Eastments rink winning by 10 shots.
On Saturday Winscombe visited Bristol Bowling Club for a 4 rink friendly fixture. At tea after 10 ends Winscombe were losing on all 4 rinks but by the close had won on 2 rinks and lost on 2 rinks. Particularly noteworthy was the rink skipped by Tony Dudley who were 0- 11 down after just 6 ends but managed to win on the last end thanks to some exhibition bowling by the front end, Brian Paul and Paul Hopes.

Wednesday 9th May - JOHN BAKER
A sad day for the club as it was the day we said farewell to our mate John.

The green was opened on a dull , cold afternoon by Janet Waymouth who bowled the first wood of the season

This resulted in a win for the Captain's team by 4 shots.
Following an excellent supper for over 80 members The President distributed gifts to a number of members in appreciation
