2013 News April to July has been moved Here

20th November 2013
The new sprinkler system was installed today. This involved replacing the big water tank which had sprung a leak aswell as replacing the sprinkler heads.
In order to get the new tank into the green Jim Lukins kindly offered the use of his fork lift vehicle. The tank was lifted in the car park and trundled down the main road and lifted over the hedge. Traffic came to a halt for a short time whilst this was done very efficiently.
A small team then man handled the tank into the corner by the shed where it was installed.

Winscombe 's season drew to a close with the traditional Captain v President game. A full 6 rinks played a mixed game and the result was a 10 shot win for the Captain's side. This reversed the outcome on President's Opening Day when the President won. Almost 70 members enjoyed a Closing Day Supper and speeches by both Captains and The President thanked those members who had contributed to the smooth running of the club during the year.
Earlier in the week Winscombe had two of their last fixtures cancelled but played their annual tussle with Notts County Tourists. The County has been coming to Winscombe every year since 1937 and although numbers were down a little this year a competitive 5 rink match took place . The game was delayed to allow a rain front to move through and then it was a glorious afternoon for bowls. Over 18 ends the scores were tied and everyone agreed it was an excellent result.

Winscombe's teams in the final week of the season in the County League were looking for some points. Winscombe A were up against League Division 1 North Champions St Andrews A and it was a close game. The 2 rinks skipped by Mike Adams and Tommy Ellis won to give Winscombe the 4 points minimum they needed to avoid relegation. With better support for Reg Birmingham on the 3rd rink Winscombe could have gone one better and secured a win. In the end St Andrews won by 6 shots overall. Winscombe C were at Victoria D and were looking for a win to overtake Victoria at the foot of Division 3. George Hills's rink including Rob Sapsford, Terry Moody and David Owen won well by 15 shots but this was not quite enough to overturn the deficits on the other 2 rinks and they lost by 2 shots overall. Rain stopped play in Winscombe Ladies first match of the week which was a friendly fixture against Victoria Ladies at home. The match had started in fine weather but the decision to call a halt came when the heavens opened and both captains decided that common sense should prevail and called their teams off the green. The ladies went in for an early tea hoping to restart their game as soon as possible but as the rain continued the game was finally abandoned. As luck would have it, the shots over the three rinks totalled 19 for each team and therefore a draw was called.
The ladies next match was against Portishead at home in the NSTL. It concluded with a good result, two rinks drawing and the rink skipped by Eve Watts supported by Sue Lowis and Sarah Lowman winning by 25 shots to 16. Winscombe won overall by 53 shots to 44 and added 8 points to their league total. The ladies also put out a friendly rink which lost by 11 shots to 20.

Winscombe won 2 friendly games this week but lost all their league games and their annual match with Madeira Bowling Club Exmouth for the Marjorie Stewart Trophy.

Presidents Chris Fox(Madeira) and Lew Collier (Winscombe)

The Marjorie Stewart Trophy is a silver Inkstand given in memory of her husband Ernest who was a member of both Winscombe and Madeira (Exemouth) Bowling Clubs. It is normally a 21 end Triples match and has been played since 1950.This year the match was played at Winscombe. Unfortunately the weather played its part and after several mini breaks to escape heavy rain and thunder, after about 5 ends, play was suspended for about 45 minutes to give the green time to recover. On resumption and on a pleasant sunny afternoon it was decided to play 18 ends . Madeira came out winners overall despite Winscombe winning on 3 rinks to 2 with 1 rink drawn. This was the 63rd game and the competition was tied 31 games all prior to this game so Madeira returned to Exemouth with the unique Inkstand Trophy and a lead of 1 game in the series.

There was another close game at Victoria in the Weston and District Over 60's Triples League. Rinks were shared and the game close throughout but The Saxons pulled ahead on the last ends to win by 15 shots .

On their last end Reg needed to trail the jack into the ditch to tie their rink and the match. He hit the jack but it locked on a Yatton wood and the match was lost by 4 shots.
The Winscombe B team were at high flyers St Andrews. They were by no means disgraced on any rink losing by 3 shots,4 shots and 8 shots.
The Winscombe C team only played the minimum 11 ends in their match against Portishead in Division 3 and lost on all 3 rinks.
