Madeira 72 - Winscombe 46 : The men's Indoor match at Madeira was going well. Very well. After 10 ends we were well ahead overall and winning on 2 rinks to 1. And then the droop started to happen!!

We were pulled back on the 2 winning rinks and the 3rd rink skipped by Mike Adams lost even more shots. Tony Watts rink battled on but evenyually lost by 10 shots.

The captain's rink skipped by Mike Nash (winners at Illminster) were all square on 16 shots each going into the last end. This after being ahead by 10 shots at one stage in the match. In the Clevedon & District Co-operative Funeral Care League there was an equally good win against Yatton, this time by 25 shots. Winscombe Ladies lost twice to the same team last week after a re-arranged match away from the beginning of the season against Clevedon Prom was finally played and then a home game against the same team was fixed for 3 days later. On the away game despite Eve Watt’s rink winning by 24 shots to 11 and Angela Ainsworth’s rink losing by just 1 shot on the final end, the rink skipped by the Captain went down by 3 shots to 37 so that Winscombe went down by 43 shots to 65 overall. It was a similar story in the home game against Clevedon later in the week when, once again,  the Captain’s rink went down heavily by 5 shots to 37, Angela Ainsworth’s by 13 shots to 27 – the only redeeming feature being Sue Caddy’s rink winning by 21 shots to 16, so that the home team went down overall by 39 shots to 80.
The ladies met Clarence away in-between these two matches and this time came off better, winning on all three rinks and overall by 54 shots to 38 taking away a full 10 points towards their league score. Once again Angela Ainsworth and Sue Caddy skipped their teams successfully and even the Captain’s rink ably supported by Maureen Sprouting and Sarah Lowman managed to win on this occasion!

Winscombe Ladies played three matches this week, a friendly away against Wrington, an NSTL game at home against Ashcombe Park and a Fear Cup match away against City of Wells. The Wrington all weather surface got the better of the Winscombe ladies who went down 29 shots to 76. Skip Sue Caddy together with Di Seaman and Peta Burns began the climb back after a slow start but when the Wrington team got six shots and five shots on the sixteenth and seventeenth ends the die was cast and the final result was a 16 to 28 shot win for the home team.
Winscombe recovered from their disappointment by winning two out of the three rinks played against Ashcombe Park at home by 53 shots to 38 giving them 8 points out of a possible 10.
The ladies entered a team for the Fear Cup for the very first time this season and played their opening game away against The City of Wells. After leading all the way up until the 16th end the Captain’s rink allowed the home team to draw level and win by 5 shots; the rink skipped by Eve Watts had been neck and neck all the way through the game but lost vital shots on the last 2 ends to allow City of Wells to win by 22 shots to 15; Mavis Adams rink gradually built up a substantial total and won by 30 shots to 20 but unfortunately this was not quite enough to cover the losses on the other two rinks and City of Wells won overall by 66 shots to 64.

Their match against Clevedon away in the NSTL resulted in a 51 shots to 50 victory - after losing one rink by 10 shots, drawing one rink and winning the third by 11 shots. Mavis Adams skipped the winning rink which gave the Winscombe team the vital extra shot. The ladies were not so lucky in their game in the Wessex League played at home against Wessex. Despite one winning rink which finished 23 shots to 14 it was not quite good enough to cover the losses on the other two rinks and the final score was a 51 shots to 48 for the visitors.

Winscombe Ladies played two friendly matches this week, the first against Nailsea away and then at home against Congresbury. An overall win at Nailsea by 54 shots to 43 was mainly due to the result on a very successfull rink skipped by Angela Ainsworth with a 27 shots to 7 win. Fortunes were reversed at the home game against Congresbury when the visitors left with a 61 shots to 52 win. 12th April 2014 - (as reported to Cheddar Gazette and Weston Mercury)

Here is a photo of the members of Winscombe BC (sponsored by Thatcher’s Cider) who attended the Opening Day of the new season .

Opening Day at Winscombe is traditionally The President’s Day and President Lew Collier’s lady Janet Waymouth bowled the first wood to open the season.
There was then a spider the proceeds of which went to support our little girl’s education in Kenya. A Mixed match followed between the President’s team and Captains’ Paul and Lesley Fredersdorff’s team . This resulted in a win for the Captains 135 –117.
Members then enjoyed an excellent supper in the Pavilion. The season is off and running with the first match next Saturday against old friends and rivals St Andrews for the Tim Lintell-Smith Cup.

11th April 2014

Thieves broke into the Pavilion on Thursday night. President Lew Collier and Estate Manager Wilf Ainsworth were called by the alarm company at 3.15am and they attended with the police including a dog team. Considerable damage was done as the thieves broke the entrance gate lock , entrance doors and bar door smashing the alarm system. All this for just 3 bottles of spirits as, of course no cash was on the premises overnight. A pick axe handle with blood stain was recovered nearby so hopefully one of the burglars may well have injured himself !
