The Winning Winscombe Over 60's Cup Team 2011 From the left:
w/e 10th September: The Over 60's won the Knockout Cup for the 2nd successive year at Ashcombe beating St Andrews
by no less than 49 shots. On a dull but thankful rain free afternoon the match was never in doubt .After just 4 ends Winscombe shot into a 10 shot lead and built steadily on it to be leading by 40 shots after 10 ends. Wilf had the honour of presenting the Cup to Les Baldwin this year's Captain. A great end to Winscombe's season . President John Baker who has not enjoyed the best of health this year was delighted with the Club's success and sent his heartiest congratulations to the team . Greenkeepers 2 Wood Competition: Greenkeeper Westlake 's Club 2 Wood Competition took place on Saturday afternoon. 12 Pairs competed against each other in short 8 end games and the winning 2 pairs fought it out in a 10 end final.The winners were Ron Wootten and Paul Hopes who beat Robin Lowman and late substitute John Vincent.
w/e 3rd September : In the Somerset County League Division 1 North Winscombe A finished the season in fine form winning their last two matches to snatch second place in the league on shot difference. It was a very close finish with Portishead RBL,Congresbury,West Backwell,Isle of Wedmore and Clevedon all in contention. Unfortunately this year only one team is promoted from this league. Winscombe B Team finished in 6th place in Division 2 North. The ladies lost in the North Somerset Triples League against Portishead RBLand in a Friendly at Yatton..
w/e 27th August: WINSCOMBE FLOODLIGHT TOURNAMENT - results on Tournaments page w/e 20th August: Winscombe won both matches against Clevedon this week. The first match was a Weston and District Over 60's game which Winscombe won by 3 rinks to 2 with 1 drawn and by 11 shots. The match later in the week was a friendly which Winscombe won by 9 shots.
In the county league only the B team were playing this week against Chew Stoke B. Against the play and thanks to some very lucky wicks Chew Stoke came away with a win and 10 points to Winscombe's 2.
At Wrington a mixed Winscombe team failed to master the artificial surface and were soundly thrashed . The Ladies lost both their North Somerset Triples League games. Long Ashton reversing the result on their green and Portishead winning by 16 shots. w/e 13th August : Winscombe won both their friendly matches at home this week. Both matches were triples and whilst the rinks were shared with Bath Winscombe won by 44 shots. The match against Wyrral park was much closer with Winscombe only winning on 2 rinks but managed to reverse the result at Wyrral earlier in the season winning by 3 shots. The Over 60s match at Wedmore resulted in a win for Wedmore which was some consolation for them losing to Winscombe in both league matches last week. w/e 6th August: Winscombe's winning run continued when they defeated Madeira Bowling Club (Exemouth) in the annual Stewart Trophy Match. This is an unusual match as it is a Triples game played over 21 ends for an ink stand donated by a former Winscombe player who went to live and play for the Madeira Club in Exemouth.Winscombe won 4 rinks to 2 and by 17 shots. In the Somerset League this week both Winscombe teams played Isle of Wedmore. One at home and one away. The A Team were at home and trounced top of the league Isle of Wedmore by winning on all 3 rinks to secure maximum points. At Wedmore the B Team had a much tighter game eventually winning on 2 rinks to 1 and by 4 shots to take 10 points to Wedmore's 2. In the WSM Over 60s League Winscombe had 2 matches this week . Against Clarence at home Winscombe won by 67 shots and won on all rinks but one which was drawn. Winscombe 19 points to Clarence 1 point. Away at Victoria it was a very close game with the rinks being shared 3 wins each . However, Victoria won overall by 9 shots. Victoria 14 points to Winscombe 6 points. The Mixed Triples match at Burnham on Sea resulted in an overwhelming win for Winscombe by 49 shots. Ladies : Winscombe Ladies won at Long Ashton by 2 shots thanks to an impressive win by Trixie Miles,Eve Watts and Angela Ainsworth and a close match on captain Mavis Adams' rink were they lost by just 1 shot. w/e 30th July: The best week of the season so far for Winscombe . The highlights were winning at Banwell to retain the Parrott Shield and beating Clarence in the Over 60's Cup to move one step closer to retaining this trophy too. Winscombe also beat Victoria at home to counter Victoria's win at Weston super Mare earlier in the season. |
