Opening Days - Saturday 17th April 2010 and Sunday 18th April 2010
On Saturday the President's wife Carol Baker opened the new season at Winscombe when she delivered the first wood on a beautiful day for playing bowls.
There then followed our traditional spider for a bottle of whisky in aid of our club charity The South West Children's Hospice. Together with a collection later we raised over £160. The men then enjoyed a friendly competitive match between the Presidents team (John Baker) and the Captains team(Tony Dudley) which resulted in a very close game . Tony's team winning 3 rinks and John's 2 but overall the President won by 1 shot. However, on this wonderful spring day the real winner was bowls. The ladies then treated us to a sumptuous supper in the Pavilion which rounded off a perfect day.
On Sunday we did it all again when the ladies had their Opening Day. Ladies Captain Helen Watson had organized a mixed match which again proved to be a close contest with no less than 3 rinks all being decided by 1 shot. Unfortunately one rink (Tony Watts) did not enter into the spirit of the day by winning on the captains rink by 17 shots !! Again, a lovely day for bowls finished off by an excellent supper provided by our fantastic ladies.

St Andrews v WBC - Triples Indoor (1 rink)
One of the The Club's best kept secrets is the long running indoor Triples match between a rink from St Andrews and a rink from WBC. This has taken place for over 20 years on Tuesday mornings throughout the indoor season. I am pleased to advise that WBC have retained the Cup for the 3rd Successive year with 2 games still to play. The Winscombe Triple was made up from :- Reg Burman,Ronnie Wootten,Mike Nash,Roger Knight and Ken Whatling . The fixture is played on a rolling weekly basis with the losing team getting 1 shot start the following week. Players change playing positions every 5 ends and coffee is taken after 8 ends. It is a very social morning but fiercely competitive. A cup is awarded to the winners but just like
'the ashes' is retained in the St Andrew's Trophy cabinet. Notalota people know that !
